Demolition work has officially started on three tower blocks in Coventry's Spon End, marking a significant milestone in the area’s major regeneration project.
The 1960s-built blocks, Kerry House, Milestone House, and Trafalgar House, are being taken down by housing association Citizen, working in partnership with The Hill Group. Coventry City Council and Homes England are also supporting the project.
The buildings, which have recently featured in BBC productions such as This Town, My Name is Leon, and Phoenix Rise, are being carefully dismantled, starting with the removal of internal fixtures and fittings. Full demolition will follow in the coming months.
This marks the first stage of a wider ten-year regeneration programme that will eventually deliver more than 750 new homes across three phases. In this initial phase, 158 existing homes will be demolished and, subject to planning approval, replaced by 261 new affordable homes — including 209 for social rent and 52 available through a rent-to-buy scheme.
Richard Parker, Mayor of the West Midlands, said: "Our region is brilliant at building houses but not always the kind that people can afford. We desperately need more social and affordable housing so that everyone in the region can have a safe, secure place to call home.
"Already I've provided funding for more social homes than we’ve ever funded before. But the scale of the challenge means we have to work together to build the homes we need.
"Spon End may be something of a TV star, but it’s no longer fit for purpose. It’s time to bring the curtain down on these old properties and replace them with new, high quality social homes.
"It's only by taking these bold decisions, and working together, that we can deliver what the region needs – homes for everyone."
Demolition works are expected to be completed by early 2026, with construction of the new homes scheduled to begin in Spring 2026. The new one- and two-bedroom flats are due to be completed and handed over to customers by late 2028.
