Morgan Sindall Construction has been appointed as the main contractor for the highly anticipated Brunswick Wharf development in Bideford, Devon.
The scheme, led by developer Red Earth, will revitalise a long-neglected part of the town's historic riverside, delivering more than 100 new apartments, a restaurant, six retail units, and a pop-up café.
A central feature of the development will be a surface-level car park designed to double as an outdoor events space, reinforcing the site's role as a community hub for residents and visitors alike.
In addition to the core buildings, the project includes significant investment in public realm improvements. Morgan Sindall will deliver a new riverside walk, a public open square, and a shared pedestrian and cycle path that connects to the Tarka Trail, supporting active travel and enhancing access to the area.
Planning permission for the scheme was granted in 2024, with the project incorporating a range of environmental upgrades. These include expanded green spaces, energy-efficient homes, renewable technologies, and reduced carbon emissions. As part of the design, the development also honours the site’s heritage by preserving the historic 'I Baker & Son' plaque and embedding storytelling elements in collaboration with local organisations such as the Way of the Wharves and the Bideford Bridge Trust.
Overlooking the Torridge estuary, Brunswick Wharf is poised to become a landmark for Bideford, delivering both economic and cultural value to the region.
Graham Kingdon, Area Director for Morgan Sindall in the South West, said: "We are delighted to be working with Red Earth to develop Brunswick Wharf. The project will create a new burst of life for this North Devon community, all while paying tribute to the Wharf’s industrial roots. We very much look forward to strengthening our relationship with Red Earth as we transform this important site at the heart of Bideford.
"This is an exciting time for North Devon and an excellent opportunity for our team to leverage our wealth of experience in delivering development schemes to move this project forward. By delivering high-quality facilities, we will create the perfect environment for the community to enjoy the region’s landscape, attend vibrant events, and feel at home."
