Arup has appointed John Ammentorp as Global Energy Leader as it steps up plans to expand its worldwide energy work and help clients navigate the transition to low‑carbon systems.
He joins from Rambøll, where he most recently served as Global Service Line Director for Industry and Infrastructure Facilities, spanning energy and transport. With nearly 25 years in senior roles across the sector, Ammentorp brings deep expertise in power systems, transmission and distribution, and the commercial delivery of complex energy infrastructure. He will be based in Copenhagen, Denmark, within Arup’s growing global energy team.
Over the past four years, Arup has concentrated its capabilities on the global energy transition. In that period, its energy business has outpaced the wider market with a 16% compound annual growth rate and is projected to rank among Arup’s top five business areas by turnover by 2030.
The firm now plans to double the size of its energy business again in the next four years and to broaden its capacity to guide, plan and design solutions for a low‑carbon future. Strengthening leadership is seen as vital to sustaining momentum and meeting growth targets by the end of the decade.
Throughout his career, Ammentorp has led teams delivering power transmission, distribution and district energy projects in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States, and he spearheaded his previous firm’s global energy innovation and digitalisation strategy. He holds a BSc in Electrical Engineering from the Engineering College of Copenhagen.
Speaking about his appointment he said: "The energy transition is the defining infrastructure challenge of our generation, and it demands the kind of multidisciplinary thinking and technical excellence that Arup is known for.
"I am looking forward to working with Arup's energy teams to help clients with the design and construction of the infrastructure that will underpin a resilient, low-carbon energy system."
