Demolition of the former M&S, BHS and Job Centre buildings has finished, clearing space for the next phase of plans to revitalise Northampton's town centre.
The dismantling of several prominent structures in Northampton town centre has now concluded, marking a significant advance in efforts to rejuvenate the area.
The former Marks & Spencer, BHS and Job Centre premises, adjacent to Abington Street, Wellington Street and Wood Street, were safely taken down as part of West Northamptonshire Council’s (WNC) wider regeneration programme.
WNC appointed Colemans to deliver the complex works, which began last year and are now complete. The clearance opens the way for future development, supporting long-term ambitions to introduce new homes, retail and leisure opportunities in the town centre.
The project involved asbestos removal, internal soft stripping, full demolition, and the removal of slabs and foundations. Given the busy location, measures were in place to minimise disruption throughout, including continuous monitoring of noise and vibration and dust control using water suppression.
Safety, environmental responsibility and efficiency were central to delivery, with detailed planning and engineering assessments helping to ensure the works were completed safely while protecting neighbouring businesses and residents.
Wherever possible, materials from the demolition have been recycled, supporting broader efforts to cut waste and promote sustainable construction practices.
