Network Rail's extensive £6 million summer programme in the Sunderland area has reached its midpoint, with further activity scheduled over the weekends of 11–12 and 18–19 July, building on engineering completed across the last two weekends.
The package includes renewing 664 metres of track through both platforms at Sunderland station to deliver smoother, more dependable journeys. Eight sets of points are being completely renewed to boost reliability of these critical switches and crossings, which enable Nexus Metro services to reach the main line and operators to access sidings for trains starting or terminating at Sunderland. The work is especially complex due to the proximity of the points to the station platforms and their position between two tunnel bores.
Additional works involve upgrading point heating equipment to keep rails clear of snow and ice, renewing 373 metres of drainage at Brockley Whins to reduce flood risk, resurfacing roads at Boldon Lane and Tile Shed level crossings for a smoother ride and less wear on the railway, installing new components in a set of points at Boldon, and removing overgrown vegetation threatening to obscure two signals.
Travel changes for 11–12 July include: Grand Central services between Sunderland and London King’s Cross operating between Seaham/Hartlepool and King’s Cross only, with rail-replacement buses between Sunderland and Seaham/Hartlepool. On Sundays, the first London service will start from Eaglescliffe at 09.24, with a replacement bus from Sunderland at 07.40 to connect. Northern will run rail-replacement buses between Newcastle and Horden, with amended trains between Carlisle and Newcastle, and between Seaham and Middlesbrough. No Metro trains will operate between Brockley Whins and South Hylton; the 901 replacement bus will run in both directions, and services elsewhere may differ from the usual timetable.
On 18–19 July, Grand Central will use rail-replacement buses between Sunderland and Eaglescliffe, with trains running Eaglescliffe–London King's Cross. Northern will operate rail-replacement buses between Newcastle and Middlesbrough.
