Work has started on the Rivertown community hub project in Shotton following the appointment of Gareth Morris Construction Ltd (GMC) as main contractor.
The Pontfadog-based North Wales firm began on-site works on Monday 29 June 2026.
The multi-million-pound scheme will convert the Rivertown United Reformed Church into a modern, lively hub, bringing together a range of services and organisations to support local people.
The initiative is the result of strong partnership working. Flintshire County Council’s Regeneration Team has backed the project since 2023, collaborating with the Rivertown Project Partnership Group and other stakeholders to shape the plans and help secure investment.
More than £2 million has now been raised, including £750,000 from the Welsh Government's Transforming Towns programme. Private donations exceeding £1 million have been provided by the Moondance Foundation, the Benefact Trust, the Garfield Weston Foundation, the Oakdale Trust, the Parc Adfer Community Benefit Fund and the United Reformed Church Wales Synod.
To maintain services during construction, Rivertown has temporarily moved its activities to the former Bryn Tirion School. The build is expected to take around 44 weeks, with completion anticipated by April 2027.
Chris Atherton, Project Lead for Rivertown, said: "This is a hugely exciting moment for everyone involved in Rivertown. Over the past few years, we've worked tirelessly with our partners to turn our shared vision into a reality. The support we've received - particularly from Flintshire County Council - has been instrumental in helping us secure the funding and confidence needed to move forward.
"As we begin work on site and continue our activities from Bryn Tirion, we remain committed to creating a welcoming, inclusive space that will serve the whole community for many years to come."
