From today, Wednesday 1 July, the Penarth Road and Riverside (Fish Jetty) car parks serving Cardiff Central station will close for good, including pick-up and drop-off at both sites, ahead of preparatory works for the station’s transformation.
Drivers should now use the new multi-storey car park at Central Quay on Crawshay Street for access to Cardiff Central.
Delivered by Network Rail as the first phase and key enabler of the wider station upgrade, the modern facility provides 681 spaces. All bays, except those with EV chargers, can be used for pick-up and drop-off, with a free 20-minute period.
The car park is operated by APCOA and includes 28 electric vehicle charging points, secure cycle parking and provision for a future 24-hour car rental scheme. It has been assessed by the British Parking Association and is expected to receive Park Mark accreditation, recognising strong safety and security standards.
This development unlocks land for future regeneration within the Metro Central programme, a multi-modal scheme that includes the £140 million Cardiff Central Enhancement Project, the Cardiff Crossrail to improve links between Cardiff Central and Cardiff Bay, and the potential for up to 300 new homes.
Major projects of this nature require ongoing collaboration and careful planning, and further updates will be shared as work advances.
The Metro Central programme is being delivered through the Canolog alliance — a partnership of public sector bodies aiming to transform travel in central Cardiff and the wider region by improving connections between bus, rail, walking, wheeling and cycling, and encouraging sustainable travel.
