EU Ministers To Hold Emergency Steel Talks

A request by the Business Secretary Sajid Javid for an emergency steel meeting with European ministers has been granted.

Following talks with Luxembourg, which holds the European Union (EU) presidency, it has been agreed that talks will take place within the next ten working days.

In recent weeks, thousands of jobs losses within the industry have been announced due to the collapse of SSI in Redcar, Cleveland, along with cutbacks at Tata Steel in North Lincolnshire and in Lanarkshire.

The Steel industry has said unfair Chinese imports are to blame, as well as the higher energy costs in faces compared with rivals elsewhere in Europe.

Business Secretary Sajid Javid said: "I have been lobbying member states and met European commissioners to drive up the importance of this issue.

"I have called for an urgent EU Council meeting on steel, and I am pleased the Luxembourg presidency has agreed that this will take place within the next 10 working days.

"I am determined this council leads to swift action, not just a talking shop."
