Greenwich Council is the first local authority in London to start construction work on new Council homes for rent, funded through the Government's £500 million Local Authority New Build Programme.

Councillors were on site for the launch of the scheme at Woodlands Park Road, Greenwich, which will see six semi-detached houses built for rent to local families in need of housing.

The house-building programme, totalling 63 homes in all, is one of the largest in London to be funded through the Local Authority New Build Programme, which is being administered on behalf of the Government by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).

Cllr Peter Brooks, Deputy Leader of Greenwich Council, was joined on site by Cllr Maureen O’Mara, the Council's Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services.

Cllr Brooks said: "Greenwich has a very good track record in attracting investment to help build new affordable homes for families in housing need.

"That success has been developed through forging strong partnerships with both housing associations and private developers, and has helped ensure that thousands of new homes have been built, many of them on once-derelict sites that are being brought back to life.

"It's excellent news that this Government programme is also enabling us to build our own homes for rent."
