Construction work is set to start on a £4.8 million development of affordable homes for older residents in Wombwell, near Barnsley.
The 50 apartments are designed for people aged over 55 and will all be for affordable rent. They are being developed by South Yorkshire Housing Association (SYHA) and will be built by affordable housing developer Lovell. Work will start in February on the year-long construction programme.
The new homes are going ahead with funding from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) on land made available by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council at the former Highfields Primary School site. The development will create 28 one-bedroom and 22 two-bedroom self-contained apartments as well as communal facilities and landscaped grounds including a residents’ garden.
"We are very pleased to have the support of Barnsley Council for this project, which will contribute to regenerating the Wombwell community," said SYHA development manager Joanne Hill. "Through our partnerships with the HCA, Lovell and Barnsley Council, SYHA will contribute to creating new jobs here, training young people, and providing new quality homes near Wombwell’s High Street, which is good for the local economy. Our architects are proud to offer an attractive new apartment building for Wombwell’s over-55 residents."
Lovell was chosen for the scheme through the HCA's Delivery Partner Panel 2 framework following a mini-competition.
