The work to regenerate Waterloo Road in Blackpool, designed to bring road speeds down and give pedestrians and other road users a friendlier and more accessible shopping environment, has now been completed.
A one-way system has been created from Lytham Road to the Promenade to create more parking spaces and wider footways. All roads have now reopened.
Block paving is used on the road giving a cobblestone effect - designed to take away the comfortable feeling of tarmac on the road, encouraging drivers to slow down and creating a shared space atmosphere. A new continental-style roundabout at the junction of Waterloo Road and Lytham Road also encourages road users to slow down by utilising tighter corners and straighter entry angles.
The carriageway has been narrowed and echelon parking spaces have been created, giving better access to the shops and footways have been widened, offering more space for shoppers, and pedestrians with Courtesy Crossing points to assist road crossings.
Improved lighting also enhances the user experience and entrance features onto Waterloo Road have been installed to form an archway across the carriageway and remind motorists that they are entering a district centre.
