Cherwell District Council's Executive agreed the next phase towards the reopening of the open air pool at Woodgreen by appointing consultants to oversee the finance, design and completion of the scheme.
The pool is set to be overhauled later this year under the guidance of project managers and technical experts.
Work includes substantial refurbishment and replacement of the pool water treatment plant, a new pool tank lining system, upgrading of the pool surrounds, access improvements and enhancements to the main building.
"Getting the pool up and running shows the Council's commitment to providing facilities for the residents of Banbury and surrounding areas; but especially for those in Ruscote and Neithrop. It will also give youngsters something to do in the summer months," said Cllr George Reynolds, the Portfolio Holder for Community, Health and Environment.
"Having a team of experts oversee the complete refurbishment is the best way forward. It's not a quick fix but a long term commitment and will ensure the pool is returned to its former glory," he said.
The Council has allocated £1.3m for the upgrade of the pool.
