A scheme which will strengthen Herodsfoot Village Bridges is due to start on the week commencing 28 April 2008, it has been announced.

The bridges carry the unclassified road that passes through Herodsfoot Village over two unnamed tributaries of the River West Looe.

The bridge to the west of the village is to be strengthened first, replacing the internal granite beams with a cast in-situ reinforced concrete deck. The bridge in the centre of the village will then be strengthened by overlaying the existing granite beams with orthotropic steel plates. The upstream concrete edge beam will also be replaced with granite beams to improve the aesthetics of the structure. On completion of the works there will be no visible signs of the strengthening.


Two temporary diversion routes will be signed, one for large vehicles and one for smaller vehicles. The diversion route and closure of the road will ensure that no part of the village will be isolated during the works.

CORMAC, the highway maintenance and construction arm of Cornwall County Council, will be carrying out the strengthening works. Provided there are no unforeseen problems the operation should last approximately 12 weeks.
