Saint-Gobain has announced plans to open a new low-carbon stone wool insulation manufacturing facility in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, as part of its commitment to sustainable construction and net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Set to begin production in 2027, the plant will initially produce 50,000 tonnes of high-performance stone wool insulation annually for the UK market, with the potential to double capacity to 100,000 tonnes per year.

The facility will feature cutting-edge technology, including a fully electric furnace powered entirely by renewable electricity. This major investment aims to significantly reduce the embodied carbon in construction by lowering the CO₂ emissions (scope 1 and 2) associated with stone wool insulation production. It also responds to rising demand for low-carbon building materials in the UK.
