The Glasgow office of global multi-disciplinary consultancy Halcrow has secured a major commission for the massive regeneration project which is expected to transform the east end of Glasgow and part of South Lanarkshire.
Halcrow has been appointed by the Clyde Gateway Regeneration Initiative to lead a strategic implementation study for the South Dalmarnock and Shawfield districts. Stage 1 of the study will be developed over five months, during which Halcrow’s development planning team will produce a practical urban solution focusing on planning and urban design, transportation, market appraisal, infrastructure and environmental issues.
Keith Pender, Clyde Gateway Regeneration Initiative commented: “We are pleased to announce the appointment of Halcrow to undertake the study and implementation strategy for the South Dalmarnock and Shawfield areas of the Clyde Gateway regeneration project.
“This work will allow the Initiative to develop imaginative proposals that can be delivered for this critical area; particularly in the context of Glasgow’s 2014 Commonwealth Games bid.”
The Clyde Gateway covers a substantial part of Glasgow’s east end, straddling the Clyde into South Lanarkshire. Scotland’s economic development agency, Scottish Enterprise, is investing £248 million into the economically-deprived area, with an additional £1.4 billion contribution expected from the private sector.
Halcrow won the commission through a competitive tender process and was selected for its notable portfolio of successful project work in the east end of Glasgow. The Regeneration Initiative was also keen to utilise Halcrow’s exclusive Collaboration for Success approach. The collaboration tool was developed by Halcrow as a unique stakeholder engagement approach which is used to deliver a solution through close community and stakeholder consultation at all stages.
Scott Davidson, Project Manager, Halcrow added: “The contract win offers Halcrow a real opportunity to cement our reputation as one of the leading consultancies in Scotland and across the UK. The regeneration of the Clyde Gateway area is a critical strategic priority, not just for Glasgow but for Scotland as whole.”
Major committed infrastructure projects such as the M74 motorway completion and the East End Regeneration Route – connecting the M74 and M8 – will help to drive the project forward and will provide a catalyst for significant investment in the wider area.
Halcrow’s team of advisors will be supported on the project by Farrells - providing urban form and design assistance, and Ryden - providing market sector and business space analysis. Working together the team will bring forward a package of proposals that are both deliverable and sustainable.
