Network Rail has confirmed that Botley Road in Oxford will remain closed beyond the end of August, delaying the previously planned reopening agreed when the programme was revised in January 2025 to prioritise getting traffic moving again.

During recent drainage excavation for the new road layout, teams identified three minor gas leaks on part of the gas network owned by SGN. The pipe has not been damaged by the Network Rail work.

To ensure safety and prevent future unplanned repairs, Network Rail will accommodate SGN as it replaces a section of its gas main beneath Botley Road while Network Rail completes its remaining tasks. SGN's works are essential to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to homes, businesses and the wider community.

Tim Walden, Network Rail Great Western Route's capital delivery director, said: "We know this news will be deeply disappointing for residents, businesses and everyone who relies on Botley Road, and we're very sorry for the continued disruption and uncertainty this will cause.

"Our teams, across SGN and Network Rail, are working as hard as possible to complete the remaining work and minimise delays, while keeping the community informed with regular updates.

"We expect the additional work to take around four to six weeks and are currently working on a plan so we can confirm the timings as quickly as possible."

Network Rail and SGN are aligning their schedules and will announce a revised reopening date as soon as possible. Indicatively, the gas main replacement is expected to take around four to six weeks.

In positive progress, the new southern walkway under the Botley Road bridge opened to pedestrians last week, providing a more direct walking route into the city centre.

SGN will replace the old metal pipe with a longer-lasting plastic main to reduce the risk of future leaks and help sustain a safe, efficient gas supply.
