Charing Cross And Waterloo East Shut For 22 Days In £20m Upgrade

Construction News Image

A 22‑day programme of engineering works in central London will see London Charing Cross and Waterloo East closed to Southeastern services while Network Rail carries out a £20 million package of improvements to track, platforms and structures.

Further weekend closures are scheduled immediately before and after the main works.

During the closure period:

- Trains that normally run to Charing Cross will be redirected to London Victoria, London Cannon Street, London Blackfriars or London Bridge.

- Service frequencies will change on a number of routes and some trains will run at different times.

- First and last train times will vary across the network.

Engineers will replace almost two kilometres of 36‑year‑old track, rebuild sections of platform at Charing Cross, upgrade drainage, and undertake structural repairs to the pedestrian link bridge between Waterloo East and London Waterloo as well as to Hungerford Bridge. Consolidating the tasks into one extended blockade is intended to avoid a longer spell of repeated weekend disruption.

- Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 July

- Sunday 26 July to Sunday 16 August (22‑day closure)

- Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 August

- Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October

Ticket acceptance during the 22‑day closure includes:

- London Underground: Jubilee line between London Bridge and Waterloo; Circle and District lines between Victoria, Blackfriars or Cannon Street and Embankment.

- Thameslink between Elephant & Castle, London Bridge and St Pancras International.

- Southern services to London Bridge and London Victoria.

Full details of acceptance by ticket type, London Buses arrangements and refund information are available at www.southeasternrailway.co.uk/CharingCrossUpgrades.
