Gloucestershire County Council has appointed Montel Civil Engineering to deliver cycling and walking improvements on Black Dog Way and London Road, following a competitive tender process. Works are due to begin at the Black Dog Way junction in early to mid-February.

The project will link existing infrastructure on London Road with recent upgrades on Northgate Street, creating a safer, more accessible and better-connected route for people walking and cycling in and around Gloucester.

Key benefits include improved cycling connectivity between London Road and Northgate Street, and better public transport flow, with dedicated bus signals at Northgate Street to enable quicker journeys across the junction.

In the first few weeks, lane widths will be reduced on approaches to the junction. From the start of the scheme, the right turn from London Road onto Black Dog Way will be removed permanently to maintain junction capacity, improve traffic flow and protect priority for buses and emergency vehicles. To construct a new bus stop, the Northgate Street bus and taxi lane will be temporarily closed from the outset of the works.

A Meet the Contractor drop-in event will take place on Wednesday 4 February 2026 from 10am to 6pm at Gloucester Heritage Hub, Clarence Row, Alvin Street, Gloucester GL1 3DW. It offers an opportunity to meet Montel Civil Engineering, learn about the works and timelines, and ask questions. The session follows November 2025’s 'You Said, We Did' event, which set out how feedback from the 2023 public consultation helped refine the final design.
