Network Rail Progressing Deighton Bridge Engineering Works

Major civil engineering works will continue in Deighton over the Christmas holidays, with the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) team scheduled to work from 22:15 on Wednesday 24 December until 05:30 on Sunday 27 December while trains are not running.

The programme includes demolition of the Whitacre Street overbridge and installation by crane of pre-cast concrete parapets on the A62 Leeds Road bridge. These structures works are critical to the modernisation of Deighton station, which remains closed until 2027, and act as enabling works for track realignment planned next year.

The realignment supports the doubling of tracks through the area from two to four, creating overtaking opportunities for fast services, cutting journey times, and providing the necessary clearances to install overhead line equipment for future electrified operation.

Existing diversionary routes for road traffic remain in place; road users are advised to check roadworks.org for details.

When Deighton station reopens in 2027, the rebuilt asset will feature:

- Extended platforms to accommodate longer trains

- A new footbridge with lifts providing step-free access to both platforms

- A redesigned forecourt with a drop-off point, accessible parking and improved waiting shelters

Sophie Leishman, TRU sponsor, said: "We'd like to thank the local community for their understanding as we work to deliver major upgrades for Deighton station. The Christmas period is always a good opportunity for work to be completed as there is minimum disruption to services.

"The work on both bridges during this time will take us a step closer to a much-improved Deighton station and improved rail services through the area and beyond."
