Ion Glass Awarded Contract At St George's Tower, Canterbury

Plans have been in progress to transform a number of Canterbury's public spaces to reflect its heritage status as an international visitor destination and World Heritage Site.

St George's Tower clock tower has been in the heart of the City for centuries – currently it is all that remains of a former mediaeval church, renowned as the place where playwright Christopher Marlowe was baptized in 1564.

As part of this endeavour, the arched openings in St George's Tower will be infilled with glass to create a small exhibition space in this iconic landmark.

Peter Hazeldean, Managing Director of Ion Glass is delighted to have been awarded the contract to carry out the structural glass work, said: "We are exceptionally proud to install our bespoke glass to St George’s Tower. Ion has previously worked with Purcell, the architects on this project, with respect to the structural glass in both Canterbury Cathedral and Caerphilly Castle – it's a real privilege to continue this relationship and be responsible for the contemporary glass in yet another magnificent and historic building."

The installation will result in each of the arches fully closed in by glass, with one arch including a secure frameless glass entrance door. Ion will supply bespoke oak frames for the project, in keeping with the heritage of the building.

Peter continued: "Ion's ethos is to use structural glass to incorporate contemporary functionality and style in listed and heritage buildings without detriment to the work of our predecessors. Our glass is always perfectly measured, designed and installed with minimal physical or visual impact to the beauty of the original architecture. This particular project will include a single arched panel some 2.6metres wide and 4.5 metres high which will fit around some challenging stone corbels.

"We're looking forward to working with both Purcell and Walker Construction, the nominated building contractor on this project."
