United Utilities has installed Europe's largest valve at its Bromborough Wastewater Treatment Works, marking a major step in protecting homes and businesses from tidal flooding.
The custom-built valve prevents tidal backflow from entering the wastewater system during high tides, safeguarding vital coastal infrastructure, improving water quality in the River Mersey, and reducing odours at the outfall.
Developed by Swedish water technology company Wapro, the valve was installed within the existing 2.4-metre-diameter storm outfall pipe using a slip-lining technique. The method allowed the valve to be inserted without new pipework or major civil works, reducing installation time and environmental impact. Cranes lifted the valve into place and guided it precisely into position.
