A new bridge linking New Islington Green to the marina has been completed, replacing an old Grade II lock bridge that posed challenges for pedestrians and blocked access for cyclists.

The project, delivered after several months of improvement works, creates a permanent and accessible crossing, addressing long-standing issues for residents and visitors. The step-free link will make it easier for people with disabilities to navigate the area, while wider paths, new lighting to deter antisocial behaviour, and a non-slip surface aim to improve safety year-round.

The upgrade comes in response to the growing population of New Islington and the need to maintain strong connections between the marina, Ancoats, and public transport hubs.

On Thursday, August 7, project stakeholders gathered to mark the bridge's official opening.

Councillor Tracey Rawlins, Executive Member for Clean Air, Environment and Transport, said: "This is a hugely significant upgrade for the area, providing a seamless transport link between the burgeoning marina area with the rest of Ancoats.

"Prior to the new crossing being built there were a number of issues that people faced when trying to get over the canal, with it being particularly difficult for people with mobility issues, or those who used a bike or a pram.

"With the opening of this new crossing we have managed to vastly improve the connectivity in the area as well as preserving the Grade II listed lock gates in the process."
