Balfour Beatty has revealed a substantial £7.2 million investment in Microsoft 365 Copilot, marking one of the largest AI investments of its kind within the UK construction and infrastructure industry.
This strategic move aims to transform how the company builds across Britain by leveraging AI securely within its confidential IT environment, supporting its workforce nationwide.
This investment is set to significantly enhance productivity across the industry, enabling smarter, faster, and safer outcomes across hundreds of Balfour Beatty's projects and sites. The McKinsey Global Institute has previously cited a 14–15% productivity uplift in infrastructure and construction through technology adoption, suggesting that Microsoft 365 Copilot has the potential to help close the sector's long-standing productivity gap. Beyond Copilot, Balfour Beatty is also collaborating with Microsoft to develop AI-powered "smart agents" specifically designed to improve Quality, Health & Safety, and Assurance processes, integrating data to provide actionable insights for on-site decision-making.
The first trial of these "smart agents" is underway on the A9 project in Scotland, focusing on early-stage reviews of Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs). This automation of a manual review process, traditionally taking several hours and repeated thousands of times, is expected to accelerate project delivery and allow engineers to concentrate on high-value tasks such as design assurance and technical problem-solving. Leo Quinn, Balfour Beatty Group Chief Executive, stated that the investment demonstrates their commitment to harnessing digital innovation to drive productivity and support their people, calling it "the natural next step in our digital transformation." Jon Ozanne, Chief Information Officer for Balfour Beatty, added that the investment is crucial for maintaining competitiveness and cyber security, and for tackling the industry's productivity gap.
