The Strand Aldwych project has been awarded the prestigious Green Flag Award, recognising its remarkable transformation from one of London's busiest and most polluted roads into a green public space in the heart of the city.

This international award honours parks and green spaces with exceptional standards of management and environmental care. In addition, the project has received Green Heritage Site Accreditation, celebrating the successful conservation of its historic and cultural importance alongside its environmental value.

Strand Aldwych is the first pedestrianised green space in the UK to receive either of these accolades, setting a new benchmark for sustainable urban regeneration.

Officially launched in December 2022, the £22 million initiative, led by Westminster City Council, converted a congested traffic route into a car-free zone the size of a football pitch. The project reconnected the historic St Mary le Strand church with the area’s renowned cultural and academic institutions, including King’s College London, the London School of Economics, Somerset House, and The Courtauld Institute.

The revitalised Strand and Aldwych district now attracts around 14 million visitors each year and supports more than 400 businesses employing over 20,000 people, reinforcing its role as a major hub of economic, cultural, and social activity in central London.
