Willmott Dixon has redeveloped the Therapia Lane Depot in Sutton, transforming a disused industrial site into a modern facility that supports the borough's environmental ambitions.
The new depot now serves as the base for all of Sutton's waste collection and street cleaning vehicles. It features 11 newly installed EV charging points, helping to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and support the council’s move towards more sustainable operations.
Before the redevelopment, Sutton's waste services operated from depots in neighbouring areas, leading to additional travel time and unnecessary fuel use. The updated facility will now allow waste and street cleaning teams to operate more efficiently within the borough.
Procured through the Procurement Hub Framework, the project is part of the London Borough of Sutton's broader plan to prepare for future growth, with the number of properties in the area expected to rise in coming years. The revamped depot will play a key role in sustainably supporting this growth, aligning with the council's wider net-zero strategy to achieve borough-wide carbon neutrality by 2045. Initiatives already underway include using 100% renewable electricity for the council’s estate since 2021, supporting resident energy efficiency upgrades, and working with businesses on their own net-zero targets.
Richard Poulter, Willmott Dixon's Managing Director in the South, said: "This project reflects our commitment to sustainability and innovation. By targeting a BREEAM 'Very Good' standard, integrating energy-efficient systems, and supporting electric vehicle infrastructure, we're setting a new benchmark for environmentally responsible facilities. We're proud to contribute to Sutton's greener future with a modernised depot that meets the needs of today while planning for tomorrow."
