The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) has marked the completion of phase one of its redevelopment at Culham Science Centre, a significant step towards establishing the campus as a leading global centre for fusion technology.
This redevelopment is crucial for supporting the UK’s goal of delivering sustainable fusion energy and achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Working in collaboration with McLaughlin & Harvey, UKAEA has successfully completed the main building, garage, and a new security hut.
The first phase also included significant improvements to the surrounding grounds, such as the installation of security fencing and external lighting, a new entrance road, hard and soft landscaping, and resin surfaces.
Phase two of the development commenced in early February, focusing on further enhancing security with additional barriers, bi-fold gates, and lighting. The removal of legacy buildings no longer required is also underway. Plans are in place to develop external spaces, including additional staff parking, landscaping, and outdoor furniture.
Fatos Lleshi, Senior Project Manager at McLaughlin & Harvey, said: "We are pleased with the work we have achieved to date on the Culham Science Campus project. Completing the initial work ahead of our scheduled date in late February provides us with an opportunity to plan ahead for the second phase, ensuring we maintain the high standards we delivered so far. We look forward to seeing the completed campus later this year when key research and innovation for fusion technology will continue to take place."
