The development of a new vibrant, mixed-use quarter in Brighton has reached a key project milestone.
Contractor McLaren was joined on site by its development partners to break ground on the Edward Street Quarter scheme.
Led by developer First Base, this project will see the old Amex House redeveloped to make way for 168 attractive, private, affordable homes, leisure and retail facilities and 170,000 sqft of grade A office space.
McLaren South will build the residential, leisure and commercial development, consisting of six modern buildings surrounded by landscaped public realm.
Designed by architect, BuckleyGreyYeoman, Edward Street Quarter is inspired by Brighton's history and eclectic street scenes. It will reinstate pedestrian routes through three lively, bold, green public areas bringing forward sustainable initiatives that are embodied by the city's residents.
Jay Newman, Managing Director, McLaren – South, said: "We are working closely with First Base, our supply chain and the local community to create much-needed homes, shops and public realm that Brightonians can really enjoy.
"Edward Street Quarter is the fourth major construction project we have secured in the centre of Brighton in the last six years and it continues to be a pleasure working closely with Brighton & Hove City Council, local people and Brighton's business network to bring meaningful, impactful buildings to the city."
Steve Eccles, Project Director at First Base, commented: "Starting on site at Edward Street Quarter is a significant milestone as we move forward the delivery of Brighton's largest speculative office scheme for over two decades. The growth of the tech, media and creative sectors in Brighton has been frustrated by a lack of suitable workspace, so we anticipate strong demand for the commercial element, which will sit within a vibrant new neighbourhood in the city centre."
