Bilfinger UK has secured a key contract with National Gas to help maintain the flow of gas across the National Transmission System (NTS), a move that will create up to 100 jobs and support vital national infrastructure.
As Principal Designer and Principal Contractor, Bilfinger will lead a multi-disciplinary programme under the Control System Refurbishment Project, which is funded by Ofgem. The company's role will include the design and manufacture of control panels, alongside managing construction works to the highest safety and performance standards.
Compressor stations, located at strategic points along the NTS, play a crucial role in maintaining gas pressure and ensuring continuous flow at speeds of up to 25 mph (40 km/h). The refurbishment of these control systems is essential for maintaining reliable and efficient gas supply across the country.
This latest contract follows two years of Front End Engineering Design (FEED) work by Bilfinger and signals the start of a further three-year programme. The project adopts a two-stage approach that leverages early contractor involvement (ECI) to maximise efficiency and innovation.
Bilfinger will draw on its expertise across engineering, automation, and production disciplines, with its core design team based at the company’s headquarters in Warrington. Additional support will come from teams in Chesterfield, St. Helens, and on-site at key locations. The design phase will involve 40 to 50 people, with the workforce increasing to around 100 during peak construction.
Ben Hill, Gas Framework Director at Bilfinger Engineering & Maintenance UK, said: "This contract is a testament to our successful collaboration with National Gas and our readiness to take the project forward into detailed design, build and commissioning. By utilising resources from our Engineering, Automation, and Production teams, we are well-equipped to deliver comprehensive solutions that meet the highest standards of safety and performance.
"Our partnership with National Gas reflects our commitment to innovation, efficiency, and sustainability and we look forward to continuing our collaboration to meet the challenges of net zero."
