Structural Investigations To Be Carried Out At St James' Baths

Construction News Image
Specialist restoration company Stone Edge are to carry out detailed investigation work into the historic St James' Baths building in Waterdale, Doncaster.

Following a roof collapse, the Grade II-listed building is in a poor state of repair and the council has commissioned an investigation to determine the future of the site.

The building was originally close in September 2013 on health and safety grounds following sustained structural damage.

Interim repairs will be carried out to a roof over part of the complex, while comprehensive structural investigation will identify the true extent of the problems so the viability of refurbishing the building for a future use can be established.

Historic England, with whom the proposals have been agreed, have adsied that detailed investigations are needed to understand the level of corrosion to the steel frame over the pool hall, the pool tank and the subway tunnel.

Peter Dale, the council's Director of Regeneration and Environment, said: "The detailed investigations will uncover the true state of the problems faced by the building going forward. We are working closely with Historic England during this process and the findings will help us explore options for the future of St James' Baths."

Historic England's Inspector of Historic Buildings, Emma Sharpe, said: "We welcome these investigation works to establish the condition of the building. We are keen to keep working with Doncaster Council to explore options for the future of the Grade II listed St James' Baths."

The investigations will be complete in the summer.
