Crossrail Electricians To Take Further Strike Action Over Pay Dispute

Construction News Image
Electricians working on Crossrail project are set to take further strike action in a dispute over pay with their employer, Balfour Beatty.

Up to 80 staff working on the Woolwich section of the scheme will take industrial action next month over the non-payment of industry standard project completion payments.

The four new 24-hour strikes will begin at 6am on 07, 14, 21 and 28 of February.

The electricians are seeking an second tier payment and a four week finishing bonus (which is payable when workers are made redundant).

A previous 24-hour strike was held on Wednesday, 10 January, marking the first time action had occurred on the multi-billion pound project.

Unite said as a result of this strike, Balfour Beatty will meet with the union to discuss the issue today, 19 January.

Unite regional officer Guy Langston said: "Our members are simply seeking payments which are standard practice in the industry on this type of project and which ensure that workers do not suffer financial losses when they are made redundant as the project reaches completion.

"A single day's strike has already created delays on the project and increased industrial action will create widespread disruption throughout Crossrail."
