The UK Government has backed plans to build over 48,000 'garden village' homes across England.

The 14 new projects consist of between 1,500 - 10,000 homes and will be built from Devon to Derbyshire, Cornwall to Cumbria.

Each scheme will have access to a £6 million fund over the next two financial years to support their delivery.

In addition, the Government has also announced its support for three new garden towns in Aylesbury, Taunton and Harlow & Gilston, with a £1.4m fund to support their delivery. A garden town is a development of over 10,000 homes.


Overall, these 17 schemes have the potential for almost 200,000 new homes across the country.

Housing and Planning Minister Gavin Barwell said: "Locally-led garden towns and villages have enormous potential to deliver the homes that communities need.

"New communities not only deliver homes, they also bring new jobs and facilities and a big boost to local economies. These places combined could provide almost 200,000 homes."

More than 25,000 Government-supported housing starts are expected in garden villages, towns and cities by 2020.
