Planning has been approved for the third phase of a £50 million restoration project in Preston.

Construction of a new indoor Market Hall, as part of the Markets Quarter development, is to begin in early 2017.

Designed by architects Frank Whittle Partnership, in partnership with Greig and Stephenson Associates, plans include creating a canopy roof structure as well as indoor space for new market stalls and cafés.

In addition, a contemporary 'box market' will be built under the recently restored Fish Market canopy. The 'box market' will be developed from upgraded painted containers fitted out with doors, windows and electricity.


Work to restore the larger market canopy is underway and a new Market Hall will allow the current indoor market to be redeveloped, making way for a new cinema, restaurants and multi-storey car park.

Councillor Robert Boswell said: "This wonderful design for our new market hall is a credit to the architects. It strikes absolutely the right note creating a modern, innovative structure that will enhance the use of the stunning historic market canopy. The building will provide a great setting for the new indoor market both for our market traders to trade from and for the people of Preston to shop, eat and spend some time in."
