Polyflor And Altro Create Recofloor

Founded by leading flooring manufacturers Polyflor and Altro to divert waste material from landfill, Recofloor is the UK’s national award-winning vinyl flooring recycling scheme and has more than 650 collectors and 63 drop-off sites throughout the UK and Ireland.

The scheme is the perfect partner for recycling waste vinyl flooring from any construction or refurbishment project, offering up to 70% savings on disposal costs versus landfill.

Material can be collected from live projects, including schools and other educational establishments where Recofloor scores top marks with contractors completing new flooring projects during the long summer break when the buildings are empty.

Since 2009, over 2,300 tonnes of installation off-cuts and waste uplifted vinyl flooring have been recycled back into new flooring and other products, providing a sustainable, environmentally-friendly and cost-saving disposal option for flooring professionals.

Recofloor’s Certificates of Commitment aid the accrual of BREEAM credits and enhance members’ sustainable credentials. This can help to attract new business, particularly on larger contracts such as hospitals, schools, residential or commercial sites where waste material recycling can be a key tender specification.

Hamish MacGregor, Managing Director of Hamilton-based MacGregor Flooring Company Ltd, believes recycling "is the way forward on all contracts" as it eliminates the need for landfill and associated high disposal costs.

Mr MacGregor's company won the Construction Project of the Year Award at the 2015 Recofloor Awards for collecting more than 14 tonnes of waste vinyl flooring off-cuts, from the new £90 million West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven built by Laing O’Rourke.

Around 20,000 square metres of Polyflor and Altro vinyl flooring were installed at the hospital, from where Polyflor collected Recofloor wheeled bins containing sheet vinyl off-cuts, a total of 40 bins over eight months.

Mr MacGregor proposed Recofloor for the hospital scheme, having successfully used a similar vinyl off-cuts collection method on another construction project. Crucial to success was effective communication that built good working relationships between all parties, ensuring efficient regular collections from site.

Mr MacGregor said: "Recofloor ticks all the boxes for the main contractors who participate.

"Moving onto other contracts, they can show what they did with the specialist contractors to recycle waste products, such as flooring."

Recofloor’s Project Manager, Jane Gardner, added: "Recofloor’s collections from live sites, such as major hospital and school projects, provide a truly sustainable, convenient and cost-saving disposal option for flooring firms and main contractors.

"We are keen to work with more main contractors on construction projects."
