Construction firm Kier has scooped a £63m redevelopment contract.
The contract, to refurbish Birmingham Women's Hospital, also incorporates a new build.
The four-year P21+ project will provide a new gynaecology ambulatory care unit, an expanded maternity unit and new in-patient accommodation, which will comprise 100% single-patient bedrooms.
Kier will complete the work in a number of phases, starting later this year with the construction of the clinical block to form a major new extension.
Designs for the new block will be developed through consultation with staff, women and their families, whose comments on aspects such as the single-patient bedrooms will help shape the look and feel of the accommodation. The hospital will remain fully operational throughout the work.
