The Welsh Government is funding over £300,000 to Rhondda Cynon Taf council to help protect 80 homes in Ynysboeth near Mountain Ash from flooding.
Natural Resources Minister Carl Sargeant said that work would start immediately.
He said: "Flooding can have a devastating impact on people’s homes and businesses. As well as the financial impact, the personal costs of the effects of flooding on people’s health and well-being can be just as damaging.
"Strengthening flood defences is a priority for the Welsh Government and in recent years we have significantly increased our investment in this area."
