The new Kier-built Trowbridge Library has been unveiled as hundreds of people arrived to be the first to use the state-of-the art facilities.
Wiltshire Council leader Jane Scott officially opened the venue with children from nearby Newtown Primary School.
The library's new home has 40,000 books available, free WiFi, 15 public computers and a children's area with a book train and an improved teen area. There is window seating for those wanting to browse newspapers, a large local studies space and express zone for those with less time. The library has half a mile of shelving, 2,000 DVDs and now hosts a collection of blu-rays.
Jane Scott said this was the first phase of a major transformation project at County Hall and represented the vision turning into reality: "Our vision is to make better use of all our public buildings, making them practical, more efficient and welcoming to local people not just to access council services but to use for community activities and events."
