The EED (Energy Efficient Directive) is being overseen by a Government initiative to "water down" its policy.
The Government are in demands for lower targets in improving the energy efficiency of buildings used for public purposes.
As opposed to a plan to create an EU wide target, which was intended to be mandatory for 20% of improvements to be made across the European Union, the revised agreement will allow EU members to set their own targets.
With a provision in the agreement, the call to retrofit only 3% of public outlets over each year, this has been changed and will only now apply to Government buildings.
The UK has, in addition to this, requested that military buildings and defence buildings are made exempt. Tracking climate change and improving our environment is the key factor in the changes and this will put the EU on the forefront – as a global leader.
Ed Davey, the energy and climate change secretary, has been quoted: "It signals a step-change in energy efficiency and for the first time sets legally binding energy saving targets, which at a time of economic challenge will help improve the EU’s competitiveness and boost growth."
