Health Minister Lesley Griffiths has given approval for Cwm Taf Health Board to proceed with the planning of a £108million scheme to refurbish the ground and first floor of Prince Charles Hospital, Merthyr Tydfil.

Work is needed to ensure the hospital meets the latest fire and health and safety standards, including the removal of asbestos commonly used in the 1970s to provide fire protection.

The refurbishment will also allow for the redesign and relocation of a number of services and departments, allowing the hospital to improve the quality of care. Plans include the expansion of the existing GP out of hours area, and the relocation of the critical care area so that it is next to operating theatres.


Lesley Griffiths said: "I am pleased to be able to allow the LHB to proceed with the detailed planning of the refurbishment of Prince Charles Hospital. The scheme will improve the working environment for staff and provide better services for patients.

"This is a significant planned investment. The Welsh Government is committed to continued investment in the health service, and this announcement shows how we can do that despite the impact of cuts to the Welsh budget. I look forward to seeing the work progress."
