Following the successful hand over of the first phase of Coventry’s new £27m eco-friendly Sidney Stringer Academy last year, Kier Construction returned from its work on phase two of the development to assist in burying a time capsule.
The oldest living member of the academy, caretaker since the day the old school opened in 1971 and proud Coventry resident, Joe, buried the capsule with the help of the academy's youngest student.
Kier Construction director, Gary Pearce, commented: "Time capsules are an excellent way to get students to think about their place in history. What artefacts sum up living in Coventry at the start of the 21st century? What will these items tell future generations about us?"
The time capsule contains technology magazines showing what we think the future holds, press cuttings of the major fire at Sidney Stringer school, the opening of Sidney Stringer Academy and quotes from the students. Kier Construction added pictures of its site team and some of its newsletters.
Sidney Stringer Academy caters for 1,250 students aged 11-to-19 including a large sixth form. The academy opened in September 2010 and is sponsored by Coventry University, City College, Jaguar Landrover and Coventry City Council.
Pupils and staff moved into their brand new state-of-the art buildings last October and Kier is currently in the process of demolishing the old buildings before beginning on the final phase - the construction of a two-storey leisure centre which will be linked to the main academy building and will house a four-court sports hall and fitness suite.
