The needs of two local communities and motorway users have been given priority in the planning of a bridge replacement scheme over the M62.
May Gurney and Lafarge are working in a JV partnership (LMG) to replace the bridge on behalf of the Highways Agency. The £4.7 million scheme commenced in August 2010 and is scheduled to run for 42 weeks.
The, now demolished, Whitechapel Bridge carries the B6120 over the M62 where the M606 joins the M62. It connects the two communities of Cleckheaton and Scholes which share essential amenities including schools, pubs and shops.
The existing bridge had deteriorated with the joints and concrete in poor condition, and a study concluded that the only option was to replace it.
The demolition of the former bridge went ahead as planned in September and the new steel beams are programmed to be lifted into place before the Christmas break.
