Special Educational Needs School Planned

Lambeth Council has announced plans for a new state-of-the-art special educational needs school which will be built by September 2012.

The £10.8 million investment will see the Livity School relocated from its current site in Mandrell Road, Brixton, to a new and expanded location in Mount Earl Gardens, Streatham - which will increase intake from 66 to 80 pupils.

The new school is part of Lambeth Council's Special Educational Needs (SEN) Strategy, which is committed to expanding SEN services to young people in the borough.

The Livity School is the only primary school that caters for children with complex special educational needs in the borough.

The site for the new school is currently used by Lambeth College to deliver adult learning which is the most suitable location to rebuild the Livity School. Lambeth College and the council have worked in partnership to ensure adult educational services continue uninterrupted. When the Adare Centre is closed in December Lambeth College will move its provision to the Brixton Hill Campus.

Geraldine Lee, Headteacher at the Livity School, said: "This is wonderful news for these very special children of Lambeth and their families. We look forward to moving to the new school where we will deliver even better educational opportunities for our pupils.

"We will work closely with Haverstocks Architects to ensure children, parents and staff are able to influence the design and make it a world class environment for future generations."
