Council Approves Station Overhaul

Construction News Image
Ealing Council has approved an overhaul of Southall station as part of the Crossrail programme.

The design includes a glass and steel structure to let in natural light along with a new forecourt.

Other improvements include:

• A new footbridge with three new lifts to provide step-free access to every platform.

• Platform extensions so the station can accommodate the new 200 metre long Crossrail trains.

• New lighting, customer information screens, station signage, help points and CCTV.

The proposals were designed by Bennetts Associates.

The work will be undertaken by Network Rail and is due to begin this summer, lasting for approximately two years.

By the end of 2017, the station will be operated by Transport for London (TfL) as part of London's integrated transport network.

Matthew White, Crossrail Surface Director, said: "The Crossrail improvements will transform the station and deliver a larger building that will serve local people for many decades to come.

"The designs show a bright, spacious structure that will be easier for passengers to get around and will provide a focal point for the local area."

Council leader Julian Bell said: "We have worked closely with Crossrail to ensure that the design of the station in Southall is innovative as well as being practical.

"The new design makes it as easy as possible for passengers to use, while also making a significant improvement to the town centre in line with the regeneration work that is already well underway in the area"

Studio Director at Bennetts Associates, David Laing, said: "The design of the new station will provide light and spacious facilities for passengers - from its canopied street frontage, through the double-height ticket hall to the route to the platforms - its transparency and lighting enabling clear views through the building during the day and at night."
