Thousands of new opportunities will be created by a new road to be built in Colchester providing another link from the town with the A12.
The announcement follows close working by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) and Essex County Council.
The scheme is a key part of the transport package required to deliver 1500 homes on the former Severalls Hospital site as well as significant employment and commercial floorspace, supporting approximately 5,000 new jobs. It will also reduce congestion and improve access to the existing Severalls Business Estate and Community Stadium.
The HCA has guaranteed £9.4m to see the works complete, with initial forward funding of up to £9.8m being provided by Essex County Council who will also carry out the works. This decision follows on from the recent announcement of £11.2m from the Community Infrastructure Funding 2 (CIF2).
This money will enable the creation of the new Northern Approach Road across the site of the former Severalls Hospital linking the new A12 Junction, via a new junction at Mill Lane to the Town centre.
Terry Fuller, Regional Director for the HCA, said: "The announcement of this funding is great news for Colchester. Together, the partners have reimagined the way we are delivering new opportunities for the region. The road works will open up much needed land for development providing homes and jobs in North Colchester and will support the Council’s plans for the sustainable growth of the town."
