Plans are due to be submitted for a £4.3 million new extra care scheme for older people in Richmond.

The scheme, which will replace an existing sheltered housing scheme and Richmond House Elderly Persons' Home will be built in Lile Close.

It will be developed by Housing 21 in partnership with Richmondshire District Council and North Yorkshire County Council.

The new development will provide a genuine alternative to residential care, giving residents their own home in a communal scheme with 24 hour care and support services should they need them.

The development will provide two bedroom apartments, some of which will be available to purchase on a shared ownership basis with others available to rent.

Each apartment will be designed for wheelchair access and will have its own sitting room, fully fitted kitchen, walk-in shower and non-slip flooring to the kitchen and bathroom. An on-site team will provide care and support, tailored to meet individual needs. Communal facilities will include a lounge, restaurant, hairdressing salon and landscaped gardens. A learning disability support base will also operate from the scheme.

The £4.3 million scheme has achieved funding from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) and North Yorkshire County Council. Richmondshire District Council is contributing the land.

Subject to planning permission, work will start early in the New Year and the project is expected to complete by March, 2011.
