Council tenants in one inner city borough are set to save a recession-busting £50 each after the authority was awarded £4.35m from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) as part of an energy saving £84m plan to insulate council housing cavity walls over the next two years.

Around 5,500 households in Southwark will see their homes improved under the scheme.

On average the energy efficiency of each home will improve by 10 points on the Standard Assessment Procedure points scale used to measure energy efficiency.

The scheme will save 5,300 tonnes of CO2 a year and the average cost saving for each tenant would be about £50 per year off their heating bill.

Councillor Kim Humphreys, Executive Member for Housing said: "Southwark Council manages all its own stock and is always looking for ways to improve the eco-credentials of its homes and of course save tenants money. I hope this welcome boost from the HCA will help us improve tenants’ homes, especially for those who are most vulnerable, to keep them warm and save them money on heating bills."
