Bury residents are getting more money than ever to keep their homes warm and energy efficient.

Figures show that 1,355 households took advantage of the Government's Warm Front scheme last year - and received almost £2 million towards heating and insulation measures.

The maximum household grant has now been increased to £3,500. It is available to home owners and tenants in private rented houses who are in receipt of certain benefits and are aged over 60, or have children under 16, or receive a disability benefit.

Gwyn McCarthy, Energy Officer at Bury Council, said: "Although fuel prices have stabilised, it's unlikely that they will fall and if we have another harsh winter, it is inevitable that vulnerable people will suffer the most hardship.

"Loft and cavity wall insulation are the most effective ways to keep your home warm and save energy. Even if you don't qualify for a Warm Front grant, there are partial grants available from energy companies under a Government initiative to help householders make their homes warmer, save energy and cut their fuel bills."
