With the credit crunch biting, Luton Council has decided to freeze heating charges for tenants for the next year.

Cllr Tom Shaw, Portfolio Holder for Housing, said: "The Council always does its best to ensure heating charges for tenants are affordable. This has been challenging, especially after the big rise in gas prices over the last few years, but we've always managed to juggle our finances appropriately. In the past, we have placed a £2 per week cap on heating increases to protect tenants. But with this year's tough financial climate, we have decided to freeze the current charge with no increase."

The Council is also working to cut energy consumption and become greener. Over the past 13 years, it has halved carbon dioxide emissions from the housing stock. This has resulted in more energy efficient homes for tenants who, when energy costs are soaring, have seen a 26% cut in their energy bills in real terms. Using the Government's standard assessment procedure (SAP) ratings, Luton overall has some of the most energy efficient ratings for properties in the country. So Council tenants are enjoying lower running costs while cutting greenhouse gases.

The Council is also reviewing its energy suppliers to ensure tenants always get the best possible deal.
