Major Talks Take Place To Save Aluminium Plant

Managers from Anglesey Aluminium are due to meet with politicians today to carry out talks to save the company from complete shut down.

The company has already declined the offer of £50m in a Government rescue package.

The plant, located near the community of Holyhead, announced 250 redundancies last week, and 140 voluntary redundancies were made the week before.

Hundreds of jobs will be lost if an agreement is not made to secure the future of the company.

Secretary of State Peter Hain said there was a "glimmer of hope" that a solution could be found at the meeting.

Anglesey Aluminium, which is jointly owned by Rio Tinto (51%) and Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corporation (49%), currently buys cheap electricity from the nearby Wylfa Power Station.
