Highways engineers are coordinating a series of important multi-million pound road improvement projects to limit congestion and support the future growth of the city on major routes around Peterborough's north-east perimeter over coming months.
The A1139 Frank Perkins Parkway has lane closures and a 40 mph speed restriction while £4 million structural improvements and essential maintenance are carried out to three bridges crossing the River Nene, Bishops Road and the Fletton Avenue/Whittlesey Road intersection.
This project, which began on 16 May 2009 and continues until October, includes strengthening beams and replacing bearings and central reservation barriers.
Highways engineers at Peterborough City Council are also coordinating several other major projects to minimise disruption to motorists and freight transport drivers.
Head of Environment and Transport David Farquhar said: "There is a significant concentration of work running through to next spring. Despite our best efforts to keep disruption to a minimum we know that there will be delays and we apologise for that.
"These are important projects and it is essential that they are carried out now. We are doing our best to schedule the works to minimise problems for motorists. However, it would be sensible for people to find other routes or change their normal travel times to avoid affected areas as much as possible. Where possible, people may wish to consider car-sharing or using public transport."
In addition, EDF Energy Networks is undertaking further works to commission new cable circuits installed along Oundle Road last year to improve the electricity network in Peterborough.
Mr Farquhar added: "We succeeded in obtaining Growth Area Funding from the government specifically for some of these projects, which have to be completed within the current year. We know that drivers will be unhappy about the delays involved but these improvements to the transport infrastructure will bring long-term benefits for the future."
