The first stage of a project to build energy-efficient affordable homes at disused sites on estates across Leicester is nearing completion.
Work began in September 2008 to develop seven derelict and unused sites across the city, after Leicester City Council approved over half a million pounds towards the scheme.
The first eight new homes on two sites at Towle Road, New Parks, have now been completed and are due to be let in the next few weeks - making them the first of a new batch of homes to be fitted with the latest energy efficiency measures.
These include the installation of solar panels for heating, plumbing which uses less water and rainwater which is collected and reused in gardens. The scheme is the first of its kind in the region, and the measures will mean cheaper utility bills for tenants.
In addition, the city council is planning to work with tenants and De Montfort University to carry out research over the next year to assess the impact of the energy efficiency measures.
The first eight homes comprise seven two-bedroom houses and one three-bedroom bungalow. The land, which was previously owned by Leicester City Council, was sold to East Midlands Housing Association (EMHA) by tender for the development, and work is now underway with developers William Davis.
The affordable housing scheme will eventually create 43 new homes at the seven different sites, including another site at New Parks, two at Thurnby Lodge and Thurncourt, one at Humberstone and one at Eyres Monsell.
